Between March 4 and March 17, 20 countries came together for the World Baseball Classic to see who would prove themselves as the top baseball hub in 2026. The participating countries were divided into four pools: Pool A (San Juan), Pool B (Houston), Pool C (Tokyo) and Pool D (Miami). From there, round-robin play began where each team played a total of four games, one against each team in their designated bracket. At the conclusion of round robin play, Canada, Italy, Japan and the Dominican Republic were the leaders of their respective pools. Despite these countries leading when entering the knockout rounds, hosted in Miami and Houston, Venezuela and the United States claimed their spots in the championship game. This year’s championship reached a total of 10.8 million viewers, a 128% increase from the 2023 championship.
Throughout the tournament, many players made their mark, displaying their athleticism and skill during highly competitive games. Some of these players include Mexican outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, Jarren Durran, as well as Dominican third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays, Junior Caminero. Caminero finished the tournament with three home runs and seven runs-batted-in (RBI). Similarly, Durran also hit a total of three home runs and five RBI’s. Durran was not the only Red Sox player who found success at the classic. Japanese left fielder and designated hitter Masataka Yoshida accumulated a total of two home runs along with five RBI’s in just five games despite taking a leave of absence during the 2024 MLB season to receive surgery on his right shoulder.
The championship game was hosted at LoanDepot Park in Miami on March 17, with a matchup between two highly seeded countries: Venezuela and the U.S.. Venezuela opened up the scoring in the third inning with a run scored by their captain, Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez. Subsequently, Venezuela grew their lead with another run by Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu in the fifth inning. The U.S. was able to find some momentum late in the game, scoring two runs in the eighth with Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper to tie the score leading into the final inning. Despite the U.S.’s efforts, Venezuela scored their third run of the game, with a double by Eugenio Suarez sending Javier Sanoja home, resulting in a final score of 3-2. This game marked a milestone for Venezuela with the team claiming its first World Baseball Classic title.
At the conclusion of the championship, Venezuelan Kansas City Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Garcia finished the championship game with 10 hits and a .385 batting average and had a total of seven base hits throughout the tournament. Additionally, Garcia drove the opening run that put Venezuela in the lead during the third inning.
The World Baseball Classic was an opportunity for the world’s top players to showcase their skills on a public stage. The next classic is scheduled for 2030, going against the typical three year schedule due to the 2028 olympic games. Fans are looking forward to the start of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season on March 25 with a matchup between the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees.
