After ten months of recovery, Boston Celtics forward, Jayson Tatum, made his return to play on March 6, 2026. During Boston’s 2025 playoff run, the star ruptured his right achilles tendon, and now, after 298 days of recovery, Tatum made his 2026 debut. This marks a transition period for the team as well as Tatum himself, as both look to regain the momentum they lost during last year’s postseason.
Tatum was sidelined after game four in the Celtics and New York Knicks second round series following an in-game injury. Boston took a major blow during Tatum’s absence, with the team being eliminated from championship contention after a loss to the Knicks in game six. Without the presence of the team’s top scorer, Boston struggled to maintain their offensive consistency, falling short of predicted expectations, falling short to the lower seeded Knicks.
ESPN described Tatum’s first game back as a slow transition with a less than ideal start. On his first shot of the game, Tatum missed a 16 foot jump shot, then subsequently missed five more shots. This raised concern for fans who were worried about Tatum’s post injury play. However, Tatum was able to progress, upping his offensive production in the second half. He finished the game with a total of 15 points and 12 assists in his 27 minutes of court time, in comparison to his average 36 minutes of play per game last season.
Many fans vocalized their confusion in online posts on social media including Instagram, X and Facebook about why Tatum’s playing time was so limited. The coaching staff explained their decision was an attempt to carefully get Tatum back into a rhythm by only playing him for short stretches of time. This would allow for the forward to once again be an all-around player for Boston and return to being the player he once was. Even though his playing time was significantly reduced, he still managed to be a key part of the Celtic’s 120-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. By limiting his work load, Tatum will ensure long term health and limit the risk of reinjury.
Despite Tatum’s shaky return to the court, the game against the Mavericks was a chance for him to make progress towards reclaiming his title as one of the league’s top players. While Tatum has yet to return to his full strength, the Celtics are still in the running for playoff contention, and his improvement could play a crucial role in the team’s success moving forward. Tatum’s comeback not only represents his name being present on the stat sheet but rather as an inspiration for young players to continue to work hard in light of injury. Games can be streamed on NBC Sports Boston, Fubo and Peacock for the remainder of the regular season.
