Several shootings in Boston and its surrounding communities over the past weeks have left residents alarmed as concerns arose surrounding public safety and gun violence. Community leaders and city officials are calling for action.
One of the most serious incidents occurred on May 12, on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Mass. Police say a man carrying a weapon stood in the middle of the street and fired over 60 rounds at various vehicles shortly after 1:oo p.m. Two people suffered life threatening injuries, while others were left to frantically escape the gunfire. Thirty-five-year-old Casmir Bangoura was shot several times in the shoulder and leg. Bangoura remains in the hospital in stable conditions, however it is undetermined if he will walk again. The second victim’s status remains undetermined. Authorities say the suspect was caught by Massachusetts State Police Trooper Landon Veney and a Marine Veteran who stepped in to help.Police later identified the suspect as Tyler Brown, a resident of Boston. NBC Boston reported on the case.
“Brown was back on the streets after he was previously arrested for shooting at police back in 2020,” NBC said. “Brown had just been released from a psychiatric hospital on Friday. Then on Monday May 11, he called his parole officer to tell him he relapsed and was ready to end his life.”
The Cambridge shooting was not an isolated incident. On May 9, Boston Police responded to a shooting on Woolson Street in Mattapan, Mas.. where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders pronounced the victim, 30-year-old Michael Jacob of Randolph, Mass. dead on the scene at around 11:40 p.m..
The following day, May 10, police responded to another shooting on Geneva Avenue in Dorchester, Mass,. Upon arrival at the scene, police found that there were two victims. Both were transported to a nearby hospital. One of the victims remains in critical condition, the other has left the hospital with minimal injuries. According to the Boston Police Department, 18-year-old Jaynell Sumler has been arrested for the shootings. Sumler has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card and discharging a firearm.
Another shooting in Dorchester occurred on May 12, on Dacia Street. According to police, the victim was shot and left in critical condition. No arrests have been made in this shooting.
As shootings continue to occur across the city, local officials are calling for action and change. Massachusetts State Representative Marjorie Decker commented on the shootings. Stating “[she feels] stress and anger”. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan urged lawmakers to strengthen laws related to reckless firearm discharge.
In response, Boston and Cambridge police departments have increased patrols in several neighborhoods while detectives continue searching for suspects and motives. Meanwhile, many residents say the recent violence has created growing fear and frustration.
