Walpole Boys Soccer, seeded #11, upset #3 Milford, after a 1-0 win on Nov. 7. The Rebels were led by senior Captain Aidan Murray who scored the lone goal off of a penalty kick.
“It was a huge win against a very talented team,” senior Captain Dennis Crowley said. “Milford has a lot of incredibly skilled players who may have appeared better than us on paper, but we worked harder and played well as a team, which allowed us to get a well earned victory.”
The key play of the game was the penalty kick awarded to Walpole, allowing Murray a prime scoring opportunity that he capitalized on.
“Aidan’s goal was the turning point in the game,” senior Captain Pat Sullivan said. “From there on out, Milford was playing desperate, which allowed us to open up our offense. After beating a good opponent two rounds in a row, we are anxiously waiting to play our next game.”
Not only did the Rebels compete well on offense, but they were able to lock down on defense as well.
“Mike [Dicenzo] was marking a kid who scored 20+ goals on the year, so to keep him from being dangerous was a big help,” Murray said. “Dennis [Crowley] was huge again tonight. He made a few crucial saves to maintain our lead.”
Aside from Crowley and Dicenzo, junior Danny Colbert was a prominent player as well by controlling the midfield.
“Now that Danny is back to full health he has been a great leader on the field,” Murray said.
The Rebels now advance into the South Sectional Semi-Finals, which are being held on Nov. 10 in Nauset. They will be matched up against #10 Westwood in another potentially challenging game.
“Milford is a talented team and beating them will give us a lot of confidence heading into our match up with Westwood, but we can’t dwell on the success that we have had in recent games,” Crowley said. “We need to prepare and play as well as we have the entire season in order to continue to move on in the tournament.”
