Living by a minimalist lifestyle of “less is more” means living with fewer belongings that all contribute value and purpose to one’s life. Minimalism is beneficial in reducing one’s stress due to the decluttering of a home or room. Having a simple lifestyle allows for time to focus on the things you truly enjoy rather than overwhelming yourself with unnecessary tasks. Minimalism contrasts from the extremity of maximalism that holds the saying “more is more.”
To start minimizing your life, declutter the space where you spend most of your time. Remove all of the objects that are taking up space and have little to no value to you. Having a clean room will allow your mind to feel less chaotic. Storing items you do not use often in your closet will help to clear space in your room. One thing that can also make your headspace more minimalistic is to have more ambient lighting that is not too bright for when you are relaxing in your room.
Another contribution to allowing your mind to feel less cluttered could be to limit the time you spend on your phone. Limiting screen time will allow you more time to partake in the activities you love. Deleting apps you rarely open or old photos will also get rid of that extra clutter in your phone, helping you achieve a minimalist lifestyle. Additionally, try to limit your time on social media; on these apps, there is a constant flow of media that your brain has to take in, which is not necessary to see so regularly everyday. Instead, spend more time doing your favorite hobbies.
To be minimalist, one normally aims to only have belongings that are a necessity to their living. If you want to buy something new, think about if you actually need it or not. For example, if you want to buy a new shirt, think about whether you will wear the shirt enough to make it a reasonable purchase. Try to avoid the impulse of buying something, but really think about all of the factors of having it first, and if it will make a positive contribution to your life or not. Getting rid of unnecessary spending will also make your finances more simplistic. You can even try to clear up some closet space by getting rid of clothing that is not essential to your life.
Adding all of these new strategies to your life may be a challenge, so you need to start small. Try to begin by getting rid of unnecessary items in your room, delete some old apps on your phone or watch what you regularly spend money on and the rest will fall into place.
