After years of anticipation, Shawn Mendes returned to the stage, following the cancellation of his global “Wonder” tour in 2022. Mendes rose to fame with a short Vine song cover that brought in millions of fans. The great interest in Mendes later led to him getting signed by Island Records and releasing his debut album, “Handwritten,” in 2015. Mendes later released his albums “illuminate” in 2016 and “Shawn Mendes” in 2018. After releasing his next album, “Wonder” in 2020, he announced a tour. Mendes later cancelled the tour, due to his anxiety during the Corona Virus pandemic, which played a damaging role on his mental health. Even though many understood the reason why Mendes could not perform, the cancellation of this tour still disappointed many.
Even though Mendes canceled this major tour, he now returns back to the stage for “On the Road Again” global tour and fans are exhilarated to see him performing once again. He is also performing to celebrate his 10-year anniversary of his well known album “Handwritten.” Mendes kicked off his “On the Road Again” tour with a European leg, including shows at popular venues like The O2 in London and Movistar Arena in Madrid. He was supported by his openers Maro and Lubiana, as opening acts for the European leg of the concert.
To start the North American portion of the concert, he had his first concert at TD Garden in Boston. Opener Eddie Benjamin performed his well known songs “Weatherman” and “Maniac.” The beginning of the concert began with Mendes singing “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” causing the crowd to roar with excitement. Soon after he performed other successful songs such as “Wonder,” “Treat you Better,” “Heart of Gold” and “Señorita.” He played a beloved song called “Heavy” which he had not played at any other concert during his tour.
In between the concert Mendes gave a monologue about how he had not visited Boston since six years ago during his “Illuminate” tour. At the show, he expressed how much he had loved to perform in and experience Boston. Toward the last couple of songs the fire alarm went off due to a large amount of smoke in the room. To conclude his concert he performed “If I Can’t Have You,” “Why Why Why” and “In My Blood.” With songs from his new and old albums, he continued to put on an outstanding concert that kept fans wanting more.
His “On The Road Again” tour is set to end on Oct. 17 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. As the tour finishes off, it is clear that Shawn Mendes is here for the long run and will hopefully come out with new music soon. Fans are also extremely happy to have Mendes return to the stage.
