After several seasons of subpar records, the start of the New England Patriots’ 2025 season gives fans high hopes for this year’s possibilities. Starting the season off with a 5-2 record, they are currently at the top of the AFC East Conference. With new additions to the roster and the coaching staff, the team is hopeful for the possibility of making it to the post season this year.
In their season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Patriots fell short to the 25th ranked team according to NFL.com, worrying fans for what was to come. New head coach Mike Vrabel expressed his discontent with the team’s performance in their first home game of the season in his post game interview, highlighting the lack of consistency and inefficient defense. After claiming a 33-27 victory against the Miami Dolphins and taking another loss to the PIttsburgh Steelers, the Patriots’ sense of unity began to shine through.
Currently on a five game winning streak, New England was able to bounce back from their slow start. In a tight game against conference rivals, the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots ultimately were able to come out on top with a final score of 23-20. Despite Buffalo’s offensive in the fourth quarter, scoring a 45 yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining, a successful 51 yard field goal by kicker Andy Borregales secured a New England victory. This game set the tone for fans, displaying how the new and improved roster has the ability to have major success against highly ranked teams.
In a matchup against Vrabel’s former team, the Tennessee Titans, the Patriots continued their offensive production, adding another victory to their record. With a final score of 31-13, key players including quarterback Drake Maye, wide receiver Stefon Diggs and running back Rhamondre Stevenson were able to showcase their improved skillset.
Maye not only accumulated 222 passing yards, but also scored two touchdowns. He currently has the eighth most touchdowns by a quarterback this season with a total of 17. He was drafted as the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after playing there for three years. Throughout his collegiate career, Maye had a total of 3,608 passing yards, nine touchdowns and 449 rushing yards. Showing his promising abilities in his first year as the starting quarterback, fans hope for more offensive improvement in the 2025 season.
Diggs, a newly acquired player for the Patriots, had a total of 69 receiving yards, caught all seven of his targets and ultimately secured three of his receptions and 49 of his yards within the third quarter of their game against the Titans. Diggs was signed as a free agent to the Patriots in March of 2025 after his one year contract with the Houston Texans came to an end.
As for Stevenson, he finished the game against the Titans with a total of 88 rushing yards and one touchdown. Stevenson has been a part of the Patriots franchise for five seasons, with three touchdowns, 279 rushing yards and 83 carries in 2025.
Although the season is only halfway through, New England fans are hopeful for the possibility of making it to the post season for the first time in three years. Fans also look forward to a more enjoyable atmosphere at Gillette Stadium with a current total of four home game victories compared to only two the entire 2024 season. This weekend, the Patriots take on the Atlanta Falcons at home at 1 p.m. E.T. on Sunday which can be streamed on Hulu+, NFL+, CBS and Paramount+.
