The media someone can consume on a day to day basis will affect their attitude and mood. Consuming political media at a young age can derail the ability to form their own opinions.
With popular social media apps including TikTok and Instagram are becoming more normalized for younger generations to have access to, being aware of what one is allowing their brain to absorb and its effects is very important for one’s mental health.
Another thing someone can watch on social media is influencers videos. The reality of influencers is that social media is their job, they are not your friend. They are trying to convince users to purchase different products from their sponsors or influence you on upcoming trends. Popular examples of consumerism are a Labubu, Dubai Chocolate, Sunny Angels, Octo Buddy, various makeup products, blind bags, Owalas and Stanleys. Social media is trying to persuade you not to inform you like a newspaper. One of the biggest trends was with VSCO girls and its items like scrunchies and puka shell necklaces and Hydro Flasks. In 2020 and 2019, the popular trend was being “preppy,” having items like Nirvana shirts, Treehut Scrubs, skin care items like Glow Recipe and Drunk Elephant.
Listening to music heavily affects one’s mood. Some turn to music for comfort or relaxation; the music one consumes is very important. Listening to sad music reflects on someone’s mood; not improving their mood, however, when a person listens to happy music that will also reflect on their mood. Listening to happy music in the morning can lighten someone’s mood and bring a positive energy into one’s school day versus the sad music bringing down your mood. Throughout the day, listening to music in the halls can also lighten one’s mood, as long as the music brings a positive energy.
A common dad joke, “stop eating so much pizza or you’ll turn into one” is one you normally laugh off, but the joke is more true than you think. While one will not actually turn into a pizza by consuming it, your mood and mental health are heavily altered by what you consume.
Be sure to pay attention to what you allow yourself to consume, not just surface level and to always be aware of the effects it can have on you. Social media and music can be a negative for a person’s mental health if not used correctly, making it important to know depending on what you’re consuming and how it will affect you.
