On Feb. 12, Hulu released part of a nine episode limited series known as “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette”. The show follows the relationship of American businessman John F. Kennedy Jr. and Calvin Klein publicist Carolyn Bessette. Set in the mid-1990s, the show focuses on their high profile relationship. This hit series stars Sarah Pidgeon as Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly as Kennedy Jr. The show captures the complexity of two people from entirely different worlds. “Love Story” also showcases how the couple navigates the press within their relationship. The final episode is coming out on March 26 and fans are thrilled.
Hulu has been releasing the show periodically, with the first three episodes coming out on Feb. 12 and the rest being released every Thursday. FX is televising the show and it can also be watched on Hulu. The show is produced by Ryan Murphy, who has produced multiple hit television shows, including “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and “American Horror Story.” According to some critics, Murphy is notorious for developing controversial series that often distort the storyline of the topics he is covering. He often deals with harsh criticism for profiting off of stories that are quite controversal. While these shows have captivated many viewers, they often lack humanization and focus more on creating an interesting plot. Specifically in the show “Love Story,” fans have been quite upset with the way producers presented Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She is categorized as a conceited mother, instead of the charismatic figure many remember her to be. While the story itself is accurate, some parts of the series are said to be dramatized.
“Love Story” connects to viewers because of how iconic the central couple was in the mid-1990s, and because of the nostalgia the series offers. The show gives off quintessential New York City and highlights Bessette as a chic fashion icon. It also is one of the only shows that focuses on one of the most beloved American families of the 20th century: the Kennedys. The series shows aspects of Kennedy’s day-to-day life. It also explores the development of Kennedy’s magazine called “George.” Similarly, the show focuses on Bessette’s popularity gain within Calvin Klein, her struggles with the press and how she met Kennedy.
While the show has already brought in many viewers, only six episodes have been released so far. The series is said to bring in more viewers as more episodes get released. Fans are excited to see how the show plays out and the drama this love story has to offer as well as the chemistry between one of the biggest couples of the 1990s.
