In recent decades, women have been redefining traditional gender roles when it comes to male dominated sports. While there has been major progress, there are still several gender inequalities when it comes to males trying to join sports which are often considered feminine, such as dance, gymnastics or cheer.
Typically, feminine sports are perceived as graceful and are often centered around beauty and aesthetics. On the other hand, male sports are seen as more strength-focused. However, people often overlook the individuals who participate in a sport which is predominantly the opposite gender. More specifically, male participation in these areas tend to upset individuals with more conservative views as it challenges traditional gender roles. Males participating in sports like cheerleading and dance, which are known to be female dominated, are forced to face assumptions about their sexuality or overcome the stigma of homophobia.
Although male National Football League (NFL) cheerleaders are not a new thing, people have recently taken offense to them and have made their anger known to numerous forms of social media. During the 2025 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings announced their cheerleading team roster. Soon after this announcement, the Vikings cheerleaders posted a short clip onto social media displaying a new male cheerleader, Louie Conn, with the caption expressing that it was a new generation of cheer. Many people immediately responded with hurtful remarks and threats to stop supporting the Vikings as a whole due to this post. The issue soon began to reach public-facing officials who had influence over their followers. Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, accused the entire team of being “too woke” and “accommodating.” Similarly, former Vikings player and current conservative activist, Jack Brewer, explained how embarrassed he felt over the cheer team featuring a male.
Over the past year, there has been controversy regarding the rules of males being on girls field hockey teams, which was authorized by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). The MIAA prohibits excluding students from any team due to gender and if a particular school does not offer a boy’s team, then boys can play on a girl’s team. Many critics argue that including male players in female sports impacts the fairness of the sport; however, the MIAA explains that they are following the Equal Rights Amendment.
“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex,” the Equal Rights Amendment said.
It is clear that there are contrasting skills when it comes to male and female athletes; however, highlighting the athletes’ key aspects can help shift perspectives and encourage more males to participate in “feminine sports.” More male participation will reshape and redefine what it means to be a strong athlete. It is crucial to remember that celebrating and appreciating the diversity in athletes’ skill will only strengthen the progress which has been made in opposing gender stereotypes by creating a blend between both athleticism and aesthetic.
