Girls Lacrosse Suffers Two Losses in Tough Week

The Walpole Girls Lacrosse team faced two very competitive teams this past week in the Medfield Warriors and the Newton North Tigers, and both proved to be tough to beat. On Monday, April 23, the Rebels suffered a loss to the Warriors, one of the top teams in the state, and lost 15-5.

The Warriors came out strong from the start, scoring three goals in the first ten minutes. Shortly after their third goal, Walpole junior Seana Cofsky found the back of the net, getting the Rebels on the board at 3-1. Medfield came firing back though, with another three goals in just one minute, giving the Warriors an even bigger lead. But Walpole, determined to stop the Medfield onslaught, scored a goal when Senior Captain Hope Kelley caught a pass from junior Erin Richardson. The Rebels’ defense had another lull while the Warriors were able to put up two more points on the scoreboard in a matter of thirty seconds, making the score 9-2. With 1:46 left in the half, Medfield scored two more goals and added another with 13 seconds left, making the score 12-2 at halftime.

The second half of play was much more stablized for the Rebels as they only allowed the Warriors to score three more times, while adding three goals of their own. Goalie and senior Captain Erin Nelligan played well in the second half and made several difficult saves. Five minutes in, Cofsky carried the ball down the length of the field and scored. This goal was followed by another from Kelley, assisted by junior Michaela Tosone. Cofsky kept Walpole’s momentum going with another goal, making the score 13-5 with eight minutes left in the half. The Rebels were unable to mount any more of a comeback and Medfield finished up the game with two more goals, making the final score 15-5.

On Wednesday, April 25, Walpole played the Newton North Tigers, who proved to be another tough team for the Rebels. Newton North went into the game undefeated and wanted to keep their five game winning streak alive, which they did with a 18-12 win. “It was a tough loss for us,” said Nelligan. “They came out strong, and you could tell that they wanted to win.”

The week proved to be a difficult one for the Rebels as they lost to both the Warriors and the Tigers. Nelligan said, “We definitely could have played better in both games and hope to pull out a victory Friday.” The Rebels will be playing the Wellesley Raiders on Friday, the 27th on Turco Field at 7:00, where the team hopes to end the week off with a win.
