Every year, people constantly debate when it is acceptable to start decorating for the holiday season. The holiday enthusiasts tend to begin their celebrations on Nov. 1, the day after Halloween, while others start their holiday season after Thanksgiving or Dec. 1. The majority of people celebrating Christmas or other winter holidays tend to bring out their decorations on one of these two days.
Many people begin to take out their boxes of decorations on Nov. 1. The morning after Halloween, people remove their pumpkins and start to put up their Christmas tree. The day after Halloween gives you exactly 54 days until Christmas to enjoy the season of joy, gifts and family. Starting the holiday so early can have benefits like more time to enjoy the fun decorations embellishing your home; but it can also have a downside, setting up too early causes many to lose their excitement for the holidays due to the fact they have to wait a few months.
“It was once considered to be the general rule of thumb to wait until after Thanksgiving before decorating for Christmas, but, in modern times, that no longer seems to be the case. People are getting excited [for Christmas] earlier and earlier,” a writer on Martha Stewart’s website stated.
Another popular date many begin decorating for the holiday season is the day after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is always on the fourth Thursday of November, so the Friday after, known as Black Friday, is a popular day to start decorating and getting into the holiday season. For many, Black Friday consists of a busy day of shopping for holiday gifts, due to the fact the majority of shopping stores have major sales for the holidays. Along with buying presents for family and friends, many are also buying decorations which often also have major sales.
“Among those surveyed, 27% put their winter holiday decorations up before Thanksgiving, while 69% wait until after Thanksgiving to start putting up decorations. The most common times include the day after Thanksgiving (25%) and after Thanksgiving, but before December (24%),” House Beautiful website stated.
The last common date that many holiday celebrations begin their decorating is Dec 1. Deciding to decorate Dec. 1 also allows people to have time to get rid of the fall decorations leftover from Thanksgiving, in November. They also then have time from Thanksgiving until Dec. 1 to clean and prepare their home for decorating and the holidays.
Nov. 1, the day after Thanksgiving and Dec. 1 are popular days to mark the start of the holiday season. The discussion between what day is acceptable, although debatable, is up to what you chose and what will make you happy and excited for the holidays.
